Talkshow and Performances at the 2024 Disability Festival, Universitas Negeri Malang

On Tuesday, 5 November 2024, the 2024 Disability Festival (Festival Disabilitas), hosted by PLPBK LPPP Universitas Negeri Malang, provided a platform to address important issues surrounding disabilities. The event brought together individuals with disabilities, parents, teachers, and community members to raise awareness and encourage action. In addition to insightful discussions, the festival featured performances and exhibitions that highlighted the talents and creativity of individuals with special needs.

I had the honour of being the speaker for the talkshow session, where I presented on "The Role of Higher Education in Optimising the Potential of Individuals with Special Needs: Employment Transition."

During the session, we focused on the challenges of disability, employment, and the wage gap in Indonesia, particularly how higher education can serve as a key driver in improving labour market outcomes for individuals with disabilities (PwD). We also discussed the findings of Caron (2021), which explored wage disparities between PwD and individuals without disabilities (Pw/oD). The paper can be accessed here: Caron (2021) study.

The festival itself was filled with joy and enthusiasm. We were treated to a variety of performances by disability communities and schools from Malang, Surabaya, and Yogyakarta. These included singing, dancing, musical instrument performances, Qur'an recitals, a fashion show, movie exhibitions, and even a coffee-making demonstration. The event beautifully highlighted the talent and creativity of individuals with special needs, reinforcing the importance of inclusion and opportunity for all.

RAND Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS). Sumber: Google The Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS) merupakan sumber data longitudinal yang banyak digunakan peneliti untuk mengetahui kondisi sosioekonomi, kesehatan, pendidikan untuk rumah tangga dan individu di Indonesia serta kondisi komunitas dalam hal karakteristik, fasilitas pendidikan, dan kesehatan.  IFLS pertama kali diselenggarakan tahun 1993 (IFLS1) yang menyurvei 7.224 rumah tangga yang tinggal di 321 Enumeration Area di 13 provinsi di Indonesia. Kemudian survei-survei berikutnya dilaksanakan di tahun 1997 (IFLS2), 2000 (IFLS3), 2007 (IFLS4), dan 2014 (IFLS5). "The Role of Microeconomics and Macroeconomics in Development"

It was my pleasure to meet colleagues and students from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Malaysia during a lecture session titled The Role of Microeconomics and Macroeconomics in Development on Saturday, 30 November 2024. The session was chaired by Mr. Azizul Azhan Bin Hussain (Joe) and attended by over 233 participants via Google Meet and YouTube. In my presentation, we discussed the core concepts of the economy and its main challenges. We also explored the difference between microeconomics and macroeconomics, as well as their interconnection. Additionally, we extended the discussion to our publication titled "An Application of the Dagum Type III Model to Measure Household Net Wealth Inequality in Indonesia." Menarik mencermati pemberitaan detikcom (19/10) yang berisi pernyataan bahwa hanya 1% masyarakat Indonesia yang menikmati kekayaan sementara 99% sisanya hidup pas-pasan bahkan sangat sulit. Sontak, berita ini menjadi perhatian publik.  Pertanyaan yang muncul berikutnya adalah bagaimana sebenarnya kondisi kehidupan mereka yang tidak termasuk dalam kelompok elit 1% ini. Apakah semuanya hidup pas-pasan? Tentu saja, pengamatan atas kondisi mereka sangat sulit. KKN di Desa Penari

KKN di Desa Penari is a horror story that goes viral recently in Indonesia. This story is believed based on the real story of KKN programme in one village in East Java Province in 2009. The KKN is an abbreviation of Kuliah Kerja Nyata or translated as practical experience of community service conducted by university students. While Desa Penari is translated as a village of dancers.  The story was originally published in a serial tweet by SimpleMan in his Twitter account @SimpleM81378523, uploaded on the 24th of June 2019. The tweets are written in the local language (Javanese with eastern Java dialect) with translation in the Indonesian language.  The story focuses on six (out of 14) students who did the KKN programme in a remote village, known with traditional dance as its tradition. Angkutan Kota Gratis di Banyuwangi  Adanya fasilitas angkutan kota (angkot) gratis dapat menarik minat warga untuk berpergian menggunakan moda transportasi ini karena dapat menghemat pengeluaran untuk biaya transportasi. Begitu juga dengan fasilitas parkir gratis juga dapat mengurangi beban biaya parkir pengguna.  Namun, apakah pelayanan gratis tersebut justru tidak membuat orang betah parkir berlama-lama atau membuat orang naik angkot hanya untuk menghabiskan waktu luang saja? Ataukah meski gratis, orang-orang tetap enggan memanfaatkannya?
